Fishing came to Soulframe in Preludes 16 on Sep 18, 2026, with six lures and six fish, among them the Emerald Prickleback and the Boilhead Wumper. You cleanse each catch of the Ode's corruption, then release it or keep it to make snacks for your wolf pup in the Nightfold.

20:43 Fishing came to Soulframe with Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound on Sep 18, 2026, and it works like this: at quiet spots on Midrath's waters you cast with one of six lures, land one of six fish such as the Emerald Prickleback or the Boilhead Wumper, cleanse the Ode's corruption from it, then release it or keep it to feed your wolf pup. Digital Extremes first showed it live at TennoCon 2026 (Jul 11, 2026): the Envoy wades into a clear green lake, casts, and pulls out a green fish under a name card reading "Emerald Prickleback". Fishing is free for everyone in Preludes, as part of the update.

How fishing works

Digital Extremes' own description is short: "Take refuge among new serene spots for a new fishing mechanic introducing six different lures and six unique fish to catch, like the Emerald Prickleback or Boilhead Wumper. Cleanse the Ode corruption from their scales and decide to either release them back into the pond or keep them for a wolf companion, with various rewards for either path." (Digital Extremes, Sep 18, 2026) It calls it a "fishing minigame mechanic" with "a variety of lures and different fish to catch-and-release, or keep, and rewards to discover" (Digital Extremes, Sep 8, 2026).

0:19 The Preludes 16 teaser shows fishing beside the pup. Under a "Fishing" caption the Envoy stands on a rock over a green pond and casts, the white wolf pup at their side, and moments later a fish leaps from the water near both of them. The fish are corrupted, as Digital Extremes put it at TennoCon: "Blighted by the ichor, the rivers and streams of Midrath need your aid to heal the helpless from spirit to scale." (Digital Extremes, Jul 11, 2026)

Fish and your wolf pup

Fish are mostly for your pup. "After a catch, you'll have the chance to either return the fish to their waters or bring them to the Nightfold to create snacks for your cub!" (Digital Extremes, Sep 4, 2026) Feeding on fish is one of the bonding activities, beside fetch, walks, combat and "snuggly cuddles", that raise the wolf pup you chose in The Shewolf Snared toward becoming your mount (Digital Extremes, Sep 18, 2026). The pup itself is on Wolf Pup and Mounts, and the home where snacks are made on The Nightfold.

Soulframe has no cooking system: snacks for the pup are the only thing fish become, as of Oct 21, 2026.

Doyen and the story of fishing

0:30 Fishing is tied to the Envoy's childhood. Digital Extremes' TennoCon announcement promised players would "Recall forgotten childhood pastimes of lakeside fishing with Grandfather Doyen in a new fishing gathering activity woven directly into the game's narrative" (Digital Extremes, Jul 14, 2026). The Warsongs trailer shows such a moment: a woven basket holding a fish, then a child and an adult walking among trees to the edge of a lake. That memory belongs to the Warsongs Fable, which is not out as of Oct 21, 2026. Doyen is on Characters.

Weather, time and fish

Preludes 16 also brought dynamic weather: "rainy nights, foggy mornings, or scenic sunsets", with "increased lightning damage or reduced enemy perception ranges" (Digital Extremes, Sep 18, 2026). Digital Extremes has not said whether weather changes which fish bite. Lords of Gaming reported that the fish change with the time of day (Sep 19, 2026); Digital Extremes has not confirmed it, so treat it as one outlet's report.

"Vegan fishing"

33:12 The team was recording for fishing months before it was announced. In Devstream 15 (May 29, 2026) the hosts show a photograph of sound designer Slater and his brother, "an avid fisherman, a fly fisherman", who "recorded a whole bunch of cool and interesting stuff", and when asked "Why would we need fish?" answer only "Stay tuned" for TennoCon.

Because you cleanse fish rather than kill them, the mode was "jokingly referred to as 'vegan fishing'" when it was revealed, CGMagazine reported (Jul 11, 2026); Rock Paper Shotgun heard the same phrase, "because you're actually cleansing fish mutated by Ode mischief" (Jul 11, 2026).

56:01 Fishing was planned as calm play from at least 2025. Asked in Devstream 9 (Sep 12, 2025) about cooking or farming, a developer answers "yes" to the wish and points to "the fishing and the mantling" as part of "creating more of a sense of adventure", and to activities that let you grow stronger "without having to be killing and fighting". Sarah Asselin later said the reaction to the fishing and mount reveals "was more than we could've hoped for" (Digital Extremes, Sep 18, 2026).
