Tempers and Crafting

Since Preludes 15 (Jun 10, 2026), Soulframe's weapons drop fully crafted with Tempers, random buffs that you refine with Ingots at the blacksmith Tuvalkane's forge. Since Preludes 16 (Sep 18, 2026) you can dismantle weapons to reclaim their Tempers and retune eligible Legendary weapons with them.

Since Preludes 15 (Jun 10, 2026), Soulframe's weapons drop from enemies fully crafted with Tempers, random buffs to the weapon, which you refine with Ingots at the blacksmith Tuvalkane's forge in the Nightfold; since Preludes 16 (Sep 18, 2026) you can dismantle weapons to reclaim their Tempers and retune "eligible Legendary weapons" with them. Digital Extremes previewed the second step in its TennoCon 2026 Devstream of Jul 11, 2026, with a slide titled "Soulframe: The Future of Tempers", marked work in progress, followed by Tuvalkane's forge screen with a weapon and its list of Tempers. The goal, in the words of its press release, is "more agency when customizing loadouts" (Digital Extremes, Sep 18, 2026). This describes the system as of Oct 21, 2026.

Quick facts

Tempers Random buffs a weapon drops with (since Preludes 15)
Example Tempers Faster attacks, Voltaic effects, more Smite chance, Stagger, Heavy Attack damage
Doubles A weapon can roll the same Temper twice
Blacksmith Tuvalkane, in the Nightfold
Refining Ingots raise a weapon's Craftwork and add Tempers
Retuning Move reclaimed Tempers onto eligible Legendary weapons (since Preludes 16)
Dismantling Break down unwanted drops for metals and resources
Bought weapons Fixed quality and set Tempers (Founders, Zenith)

What Tempers are

Tempers are "unique buffs to a weapon", Digital Extremes says, such as faster attack speed, Voltaic effects on nearby enemies or a higher Smite chance, and "Weapons can boast two of a Temper!" (Devstream 15 overview, Jun 2, 2026). They first appeared on Orst-III, a mace from Preludes 14.5 (May 12, 2026) that drops "in full instead of in the form of Fragments", "with variable Quality and Tempers, which augment the Weapon with additional properties, such as increased Heavy Attack damage, Stagger, or even added Voltaic Damage" (Preludes 14.5, May 12, 2026).

Preludes 15 spread the system to every weapon. In Devstream 15 of May 29, 2026, the developers explain that all the weapons of Preludes 14.5 would now drop in the world "at varying quality levels with interesting tempers on them": universal Tempers, "kind of like our perks", and faction Tempers, such as Mendicant weapons with "cursed tempers" and weapons of another faction with Tempers "for fencing and precision". "You're not going to be crafting for days at a time. You're going to be finding an interesting weapon and getting to use it right away."

The pool is large. The developers count about 19 Tempers depending on the weapon class plus a dozen that are faction specific, with more rolled onto higher-quality weapons, and promise that once a weapon reaches Legendary quality "with Tuvalkane" you would be able to take Tempers off weapons you no longer use "and build your perfect ideal weapon": "a massive amount of RNG that then goes into control".

A top-quality weapon holds many. At the highest tier, the developers say, a weapon can carry up to eight Tempers, universal or of the weapon's faction, with a chance to roll a double instead of another unique one. Fragments are to return later for "a rare legendary class of weapon", each Fragment a real piece such as a hilt or a broken blade.

Craftwork and Ingots

Crafting in Soulframe now means refining a weapon you already have. "Because the weapons now are being dropped completely made", the developers explain, crafting "becomes not waiting to get a weapon, but to actually refine it"; the materials you collect go into refinement, some must be combined for "master work or legendary" quality, and special Ingots drop "from interesting places in the game", such as "gifts from Omen beasts". Digital Extremes' summary: "Acquire Ingots, and forge with Tuvalkane to refine a weapon's Craftwork and acquire more Tempers" (Devstream 15 overview).

Weapons you owned before Preludes 15 were turned into "stock" weapons that Tuvalkane can upgrade from that base, rolling Tempers as they improve. Purchased weapons "are fixed at noble quality with a specific pre-selected set" of Tempers "so that you're not playing a slot machine", and the same goes for Founders weapons; both can be crafted up to Legendary. In writing: "Founders' equipment and equipment acquired from Zenith will have both pre-selected Craftwork and set Tempers by default."

Dismantling and retuning (Preludes 16)

You do not have to keep junk. When a drop is worse than what you have, you "can actually hold the button and destroy the weapon right on the spot", and Tuvalkane gets "basically the crafting components that went into that", such as steel and shards, for the weapon you want to improve. Digital Extremes: "Previewed equipment can be broken down on the spot to recover precious metals and resources", and weapons also drop from weapon racks (Devstream 15 overview).

Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound (Sep 18, 2026) made the Tempers yours to choose. Its teaser opens at a forge, a smith raising a hammer over the anvil as sparks fly, before the wolf pup and fishing scenes. "Dismantle weapons of old to reclaim their Tempers and retune them with the blacksmith Tuvalkane", Digital Extremes says (Preludes 16, Sep 18, 2026); its Devstream summary adds that the reclaimed Tempers retune "eligible Legendary weapons" (Digital Extremes, Sep 8, 2026), and the earlier preview promised that "Tuvalkane will soon be able to customize the Tempers, allowing you to tailor your Weapon to your playstyle!" (Preludes 16 at Devstream 197, Sep 4, 2026). The update's other features are on Preludes 16.

Tempers and Totems

Because Tempers took over effects Totems used to give, Preludes 15 refocused Totems "on Smites, Runes and revealed souls" (Devstream 15 overview) and tied them to the three Virtues. Stats like attack speed moved from Totems into Tempers, the developers said on Devstream 15. Totems are boons you earn by charming Midrath's beasts (Preludes 11, Oct 8, 2025).

The Envoy Forge

The Envoy Forge is Soulframe's name for crafting sets tied to an event or a boss. The first was Thawtide's Plenty in Dec 2025, earned as Fragments from Thawtide Hunters or bought from Zenith with Arcs (Happy Thawtide, Dec 16, 2025); then came Avex and Falx from The Organ (Envoy Forge: Avex and Falx, Feb 26, 2026) and Orst-III in May 2026, the first to drop whole with Tempers. Arcs, the premium currency, are on Free to Play and Arcs.

Before Preludes 15: Fragments and the waiting forge

Until Jun 2026, weapons were crafted from Fragments at Tuvalkane's forge, and crafting took time. In Envoy Hour #6 of Nov 5, 2025, Senior Community Manager Sarah Asselin checks on her orders at Tuvalkane's forge after running around Midrath, claims the ones that are ready ("I am very, very excited to forge"), and notes she needs more Dracs. That waiting is what Preludes 15 removed. Fragments still exist for some rewards: The Wreck of Mestra Carmo gives "the Fragment to craft the Duelo Pact and signature Navalha Long Blade" (Preludes 14, Apr 17, 2026).

Materials and gathering

Breaking down gear yields "precious metals and resources", and Ingots come from refining and from special sources such as Omen Beasts. Other materials are tied to activities: the Agari drop Agaric mushrooms that Verminia brews into The Cogah elixir (Devstream 11 overview, Nov 16, 2025). Digital Extremes has announced no crafting professions as of Oct 21, 2026. Where the materials are is on Midrath.

Bestitching and dyes

Cosmetic crafting runs through Bestitching, added in Preludes 11 (Oct 8, 2025): "imparting the visual style of one piece while keeping the stats of another". It costs Arcs or Moonsteel Thread, "An invention of the Steelsinger Kane" (Founders, read Oct 20, 2026), and Verminia "now also offers dyes and color customization" (Preludes 11). In Nov 2025 Steve Sinclair said the team hoped to extend Bestitching from armor to weapons in 2026; Digital Extremes has not announced that it shipped. Verminia and Tuvalkane live in The Nightfold.
