Co-op and Multiplayer

Soulframe is played solo or in online co-op parties of up to four players (three until Preludes 14.5 in May 2026), with shared fast travel, other players visible around World Trees and in Enclaves, and player trading and mail since Preludes 15. No PvP and no crossplay have been announced as of Oct 21, 2026.

Soulframe is played solo or in online co-op parties of up to four players, a limit Digital Extremes raised from three with Preludes 14.5 in May 2026; in Devstream 15 (May 29, 2026) CEO Steve Sinclair says the update "brought in an additional player so you can play with four people". Steam's store page lists Single-player, Multi-player and Online Co-op and promises "parties of up to four players". Around that small-group core Digital Extremes has added the first shared spaces: other Envoys appear around World Trees and in Enclaves, and since Preludes 15 (Jun 10, 2026) players can trade equipment and send mail. No player-versus-player mode has been announced, and neither has crossplay, as of Oct 21, 2026. Soulframe is free on PC through soulframe.com while it is in Preludes, its pre-alpha (see How to Get Preludes Access).

Bright daylight over a grassy courtyard. In the foreground, seen from behind, a fighter in a pale hood and plate armor grips a long sword with an ornate guard. At top left a hooded archer leaps high, bow drawn. At right a figure in a wide brimmed hood swings a twisted wooden staff whose tip glows green. Ahead, a heavily armored warrior in a tall helmet swings a large weapon, flanked by two slimmer armored figures, in front of stone buildings hung with patterned cloth awnings. Above them a vast angular structure floats in the sky with lightning crackling beneath it. No game interface is shown.

Party size: from three to four

For most of Preludes a party was three Envoys. Playing with two colleagues in Envoy Hour on Nov 5, 2025, community manager Sarah Asselin tells viewers: "this is a multiplayer game and you can play in co-op up to three people right now", and that friends can help you "complete all of the different fables".

As late as January 2026 a fourth player was not promised. Asked in Devstream 12 (Jan 30, 2026) whether a four-player squad would come "after alpha", the developers answer "we'd consider it", and one adds that "right now everything's built around three".

Four months later it arrived: Preludes 14.5 (May 12, 2026) let a fourth Envoy join, and Steam's page now says four. Older previews, Wikipedia and some guides still give three, and a 2025 preview reported that only the host kept story progress; both describe an earlier build. Party size matters for Soulframe's hard mode, The Cogah, in which group members must revive one another and the ritual ends if every Envoy falls (Digital Extremes, Nov 16, 2025); see Beginner's Guide.

What a party shares

A party travels and fights together across Midrath. Wevetseeds, grown after The Waste Bear Fable, give fast travel between cleansed World Trees "for you (and your squad)", and Preludes 12 (Nov 2025) listed "Improved Co-op" among its changes (Digital Extremes, Nov 26, 2025; Nov 16, 2025). Fables can be played together: Asselin and her guests freed Orengall's pups as a group in Envoy Hour. The open island is described on Midrath and the story quests on Fables and Quests.

Bosses are shared too, with a limit on loot. In Devstream 9 (Sep 12, 2025) Sinclair explains that the named bosses placed around the island respawn on a "22 real hours" timer: "If you're playing in a co-op scenario, you can help your friends", but each player can pull from a boss's special drop table only once in that window, which also stops a relog exploit. Those bosses are now called Agari; they are listed on Bosses and Agari.

Co-op has had rough edges. In Devstream 12 Sinclair acknowledged delays in hit reactions for a player who joins someone else's game, "if you're playing as a client", and said a fix was coming soon after Preludes 13. Soulframe is still pre-alpha, and Digital Extremes says such problems get fixed in the open.

Seeing other players: Enclaves and World Trees

Digital Extremes calls its shared spaces "MMO features". In Devstream 15, Sinclair says that with Preludes 14.5 the team "started finally cracking into" them: around every World Tree, players who are in that area at the same time now appear, and a developer calls it "a new way to find and invite other envoys" while the stream shows the team's own Envoys gathered at a tree.

The older social hubs are the Enclaves, the three player factions (Alca's Children, Kith of Kings and the Silent Rose), each with its own hall; the Silent Rose Enclave and its tavern, the Drippin' Flagon, opened in Preludes 8 in January 2025 (Digital Extremes, Dec 18, 2024). The Eternium Gardens are "communal Fey gardens" where Founders plant a Bloom with their Envoy's name (Founders, read Oct 21, 2026). The factions are compared on Enclaves.

Trading and mail

Trading came with Preludes 15 (Jun 10, 2026). In Devstream 15 Sinclair ties it to the new loot system, in which weapons drop with random Tempers: you might be "hoping to get things that you didn't get lucky enough for", so trading "would be another thing that's coming in P15", and the stream shows a first trade between two developers. Digital Extremes' summary: "Envoys can trade equipment amongst themselves in Enclaves or by World Trees" (Jun 2, 2026). Founders items cannot be traded (Founders). How weapons and Tempers work is on Tempers and Crafting.

The feature had been asked for a long time. When a viewer asked in Devstream 9 (Sep 12, 2025) about "a trading system similar to another game we know", the answer was "Yes, eventually", with no timetable then.

Mail came in the same update. Devstream 15 shows the mailbox, "Also coming in P15. Finally", with a gift waiting in a developer's inbox; Digital Extremes calls it "just the basic setup", with more functions to follow.

Is Soulframe an MMO?

Not in the usual sense, by its makers' own description. In Devstream 12 (Jan 30, 2026), answering chat's questions about "more MMO features", Sinclair calls it "a real-time action sort of small group game", but adds that this "doesn't mean that there can't be more opportunities to see the other players" beyond the Enclaves and the tavern, with "lots more places to group up" planned for 2026.

The label has changed over the years, so it is worth quoting with dates. At its reveal Digital Extremes called Soulframe a free-to-play "action hybrid-MMORPG" (Jul 16, 2022). In 2026 Asselin told MeinMMO the studio uses "MMO Lite" for part of the game's current identity and expects that to change (MeinMMO, Jul 3, 2026). Digital Extremes' press releases now say "fantasy action RPG" (Sep 18, 2026). How it compares with the studio's other game is on Soulframe vs Warframe.

PvP and crossplay

No PvP has been announced. No Digital Extremes post or stream we found mentions player-versus-player combat, and Steam's user tags call the game PvE, as of Oct 21, 2026.

Crossplay is not on the table yet because there is only one platform. Soulframe is PC only, played through Digital Extremes' launcher from soulframe.com; consoles are planned "eventually", likely with "a fuller release rather than during Preludes", and crossplay and cross-save have not been announced (Soulframe FAQ, read Oct 21, 2026). See Platforms.
