Open Preludes is the next phase of Soulframe, announced by Digital Extremes on Oct 15, 2026: "Simply put, no more waiting for an invitation! Once Open Preludes begins, anyone who wants to experience Soulframe on PC can sign up at soulframe.com, download the launcher, and begin their journey into Midrath." It has no start date as of Oct 21, 2026; Digital Extremes will share more in Devstream 18 on Oct 30, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Until then, Preludes stays invite-only, and the way in is the one Digital Extremes' gameplay trailer of Jun 5, 2026 closes on: "Join us, won't you?" over soulframe.com, beside "Wishlist on Steam". How to get in today is on How to Get Preludes Access.

What Open Preludes changes

Open Preludes ends the queue: today a sign-up at soulframe.com enters a weekly random draw, and once Open Preludes begins a sign-up is enough to download and play. Digital Extremes calls it "our next major development milestone" and ties it to the game's latest update: "With Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound now in the hands of Envoys, we're ready to take this next step together." The reason it gives is feedback: "Opening Preludes to more players means more voices helping us build the world of Alca." The announcement came "After 16 Preludes updates", in the studio's words; every one is on Preludes Updates.

What does not change

Open Preludes is still Preludes, the pre-alpha, not a full release. The announcement says players will "sign up at soulframe.com, download the launcher", so it runs through Digital Extremes' own launcher on PC, not through Steam, where Soulframe has only a wishlist page. No console version has been announced for it. The game stays free to play, and Digital Extremes' post closes by suggesting a Founders bundle for those who want to "support the continued development of Soulframe" (Founders Packs). Soulframe has no full-release date as of Oct 21, 2026 (Release Date).

How it differs from the open weekends

Digital Extremes has opened Preludes twice before, but only to people who had already signed up, and only for a weekend. At TennoCon 2025 it gave access to everyone registered by Sunday, Jul 20, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET; in Devstream 9 (Sep 12, 2025) a host recalls that "everyone that signed up before TennoCon was invited". Crookes explained why to Eurogamer: "We didn't realise the queue was so big when we started to let people in, a lot of the people who were immediate signups kind of got left behind."

The TennoCon 2026 "Open Preludes Weekend" went further: it opened the gates to every sign-up until Sunday, Jul 12, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and that access is permanent ("Preludes access granted during this time is permanent, meaning you'll be able to experience all future Preludes updates!"). The TennoCon 2026 Devstream ends on a card reading "Together, set them free", "Wishlist on Steam" and soulframe.com. The FAQ still says "If you signed up during the TennoCon 2026 weekend before July 12 at 11:59 p.m. ET, you're in!" Open Preludes, by contrast, has no end and needs no earlier sign-up.

TennoCon 2025 weekend Jul 19 to 20, 2025; earlier sign-ups only
TennoCon 2026 Open Preludes Weekend Jul 11 to 12, 2026; sign-ups by Jul 12, 11:59 p.m. ET; access permanent
Open Preludes Announced Oct 15, 2026; anyone on PC; start date not announced

How to be ready

You can do everything but play today. Make an account at soulframe.com: a sign-up now enters the weekly invite draw, so you may get in before Open Preludes starts. Check your PC against the minimum on the download page: 64-bit Windows, 8 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11+ graphics card and 50 GB of free space (System Requirements). Turning on two-factor authentication, EnvoyGuard, earns the Wanderquill Spirit Guide skin. A first session is mapped out on Beginner's Guide.

Will progress carry over?

Digital Extremes has promised no more account resets in Preludes, so nothing suggests Open Preludes will wipe progress. In the "Founders FAQ with Steve and Sarah" (Nov 19, 2025), Steve Sinclair answers "we're not going to do any resets", with one caveat: like Warframe, the studio may rework a system and then refund the points spent in it or give "like-for-like items". The Founders FAQ says "there will be no more account resets in Soulframe Preludes"; the general FAQ is softer, aspiring "to avoid future wipes". Digital Extremes had not said anything about progress and Open Preludes specifically as of Oct 21, 2026.

What Devstream 18 may settle

Devstream 18 is set for Oct 30, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. ET "to learn more about Open Preludes and what's next for Soulframe". Not yet known as of Oct 21, 2026: the start date, whether the launch comes with a new Preludes update, and when the two features promised for fall 2026, the Warsongs Fable and the first mount, arrive (Warsongs, Wolf Pup and Mounts). Devstreams stream on Twitch at twitch.tv/playsoulframe and are posted to YouTube; past ones are on Devstreams.
