Story
In Soulframe you play an Envoy of ancient Fey blood, washed ashore on Midrath, who frees Alca's Omen Beasts and heals the land from the Ode, invaders whose Spellsong made Alca's people forget their rites, their sacred beasts and their Ancestors. The story is told in Fables; the next one, Warsongs, tells the Envoy's own past and is promised for fall 2026.
In Soulframe you are an Envoy, a hero of "ancient Fey" blood washed ashore on Midrath, the northern isle of the world of Alca, who sets out to free Alca's sacred Omen Beasts and heal the land from the Ode, invaders whose Spellsong made its people forget their rites, their beasts and themselves. Digital Extremes' Steam page ends its premise with the line "For none are beyond saving, and it is never too late to be redeemed", and redemption is the thread of every story quest so far. In Devstream 15 (May 29, 2026) the developers call "the ancestors and the animal omen beasts that you rescue as you play the game" the really amazing part of Soulframe. The story is told in Fables, quests on the open map of Midrath, and in item texts written in an old-fashioned voice. As of Oct 21, 2026 it is a work in progress: Soulframe is in Preludes, its pre-alpha on PC, and its biggest chapter yet, Warsongs, has not been released.

The premise: "Rise, Envoy"
Soulframe's Steam page tells the setup under the heading "Rise, Envoy". The Spellsong, "that enchanted melody that sounded over Alca on Ode'n Descent", made everyone forget "their rites, their divine Omen Beasts, themselves". The people of Alca now believe their rulers have always ruled. The Omen Beasts they once worshipped "lay defiled, corrupted by Ode'n Ichor", and no one is left to free them but you: your Fey blood is "not so easily swayed by the Ode'n Magicks draped over the land", and it falls to you to stem the flow of corruption and "heal the worldflesh of Alca" (Steam, read Oct 21, 2026). The same page names Alca's suns: there are two, Mora and Saphene.
The official site tells it as a verse. You are "Washed ashore on the northern isle of Midrath"; "Omen beasts in Ode'n chain bellow in mourning"; and the verse asks who will "find the Silvern Seas and awaken our Ancestors", "learn the melodies of soul unbinding" and "break the gaunting spellsong", answering "You will, Envoy" (soulframe.com, read Oct 21, 2026). Steam puts it plainly: you awaken on the shore "stripped of all but your breath" and go on to free the Omen Beasts from the Ode, alone or with friends.
The Envoy and Doyen
The Envoy is the customizable hero you play, Game Informer's "customizable, player-controlled" lead (Game Informer, Mar 27, 2026). Your account's reserved name, your Envoy name, is the name others see in the game. Each Envoy wears a Pact on one arm, the power granted by a bond with an Omen Beast (see Pacts). Your look is shaped by the story: "Your choices during the Warsongs Prologue will decide your starting visage", Digital Extremes wrote for Preludes 13 (soulframe.com, Feb 12, 2026), and in the 2024 build character creation began with the Envoy's mother holding her newborn (CGMagazine, Jul 24, 2024).
The Envoy grew up with a grandfather, Doyen. Digital Extremes' TennoCon 2026 release promises a playable memory of "lakeside fishing with Grandfather Doyen", woven into the story (Digital Extremes, Jul 14, 2026), and the recap invites you to "Venture back to memories of your past childhood with Doyen" (soulframe.com, Jul 11, 2026). New Envoys are guided from the shore to "Grandfa's hut"; Digital Extremes does not say outright that Grandfa is Doyen. The rest of the cast is on Characters.
The Spellsong, the Ode and the Silvern Sea
The Ode are the invaders behind everything wrong in Alca. Game Informer calls them an "extraterrestrial enemy faction" draining the land; Digital Extremes' own texts name their lord, Synod, and their soldiers, the Sinecure. Their weapon against memory was the Spellsong: a Thawtide item tells of an elder who served over 60 vigils "'fore the spellsong wiped their memory" (Digital Extremes, Dec 16, 2025), and since Preludes 15 "Alca's denizens continue their way beneath the Spellsong", going about their days unaware (soulframe.com, Jun 2, 2026). Their weapon against the land is ichor, the substance that chokes Midrath's root-caves and turns Omen Beasts into Vadagar. Who the Ode are, and what their machines do, is on The Ode.
The dead of Alca rest in the Silvern Sea. As the Envoy, you awaken Ancestors there and gather them in The Nightfold, your home between journeys: Verminia the Rat Witch, the blacksmith Tuvalkane, the historian Orlick the Bicameral and others live there and help you. When a Fable ends well, a lost soul is sent back to the Silvern Sea at peace; Mestra Carmo "return[s] to the Silvern Sea" at the end of her Fable (soulframe.com, Apr 17, 2026).
The Fables so far
The main story comes in Fables, each about saving an Omen Beast or an Ancestor. In Envoy Hour #6 (Nov 5, 2025), Sarah Asselin starts The Shewolf Snared, "the fable in which you meet" the Omen Shewolf Orengall and choose your pup: first you have to find Orengall, and a note with a riddle about chains leads the way. The Fables named by Digital Extremes as of Oct 21, 2026:
| Warsongs Prologue | The opening Fable (2024) |
| The Shewolf Snared | Free the Omen Shewolf Orengall and her pups (Preludes 8, Jan 22, 2025) |
| The Waste Bear | "The Fable of the Arbearer Bromius" (Preludes 11, Oct 8, 2025) |
| The Brewer of Hues | Verminia's Fable, following her poppets |
| The Steelsinger | Must be done before The Wreck of Mestra Carmo |
| The Wreck of Mestra Carmo | Ribbons from shipwrecks and duels (Preludes 14, Apr 17, 2026) |
| Warsongs | Announced; "coming later this Fall" (2026) |
The Waste Bear shows what a Fable is for. You follow sap-smoke into Verminia's cauldron and a "sap-dream of a three-headed bear, dying trees, and a seed that won't grow" (soulframe.com, Oct 8, 2025), then face the corrupted Bromius in the root-caves and free him. In Devstream 9 (Sep 12, 2025), the team explains the Fable's two songs, written with composer Keith Power: the Song of Wastes speaks to "the corrupted side" of Bromius, and the Song of Growth "is the redemption aspect of it". The beasts themselves are on Omen Beasts; every quest is listed on Fables and Quests.
Warsongs and the Envoy's past
Warsongs is the Fable that will tell where the Envoy came from. Digital Extremes calls it "A Fable told across time and a lost history of you, Envoy", key to "laying out your journey, where you came from, and what is at stake for yourself and for Midrath under the thumb of the Ode" (soulframe.com, Jul 11, 2026; the post misprints "told"). Its TennoCon 2026 trailer (Jul 11, 2026) opens on a figure carrying a bundle out of a white tent at night, then a city burning under a red-streaked sky, a woman in golden armor, a weeping bearded man, dark shapes hovering in the sky and a basket. Press at the TennoCon demo described the baby Envoy being set adrift on a river; Digital Extremes has not said so itself.
The Summer Game Fest trailer of Jun 5, 2026 hinted at the turn the story takes. Its narrated poem speaks of "Ode irons cast with tempers rare" and "Red minnows" in tainted water, then warns: "Three Virtues, known… not all we cast. For wrath and doom and death are last." Those three are the Vespers of the Vadagar Pact announced at TennoCon: "Mired in corruption, you will draw power from your Vespers instead of Virtues: Doom, Death, and Wrath" (soulframe.com, Jul 11, 2026). Digital Extremes frames this darker path as another kind of healing: "explore how healing Alca can come in many forms". Neither Warsongs nor the Vadagar Pact is in the game as of Oct 21, 2026.
Warsongs also brings a rival. In Devstream 15 the developers tease a new voice for "an existing character" ("We had to do a pivot with where the story went"), then reveal Ben Starr, who voices Tempest Bayor: "a rare red-armed Envoy" who sides with the Ode with "his faithful raven companion". "His motivations are unknown, but the Empress of Eldveil ... seems to know more", Digital Extremes wrote (Digital Extremes, Jul 14, 2026). The TennoCon recap's demo line sums up the Fable: "Meet Bayor, an Envoy like yourself but sworn to Synod and the Ode. ... Ride into the fray on wolf-back as you confront the threat in the present." The wolf you ride is the one you raise on Wolf Pup and Mounts.
Themes: redemption, healing, nature
The developers have said the same thing for years: Soulframe's story is about redemption, and you are a healer. Creative Director Geoff Crookes in 2023: "We're really trying to nail stories of redemption. That's the theme of the game" (CGMagazine, Aug 28, 2023). In 2024: "Hopefully, we convey that the player's role in this game is a healer" (CGMagazine, Jul 24, 2024). In 2026, of Warsongs: "Our approach to storytelling in Soulframe has focused a lot on redemption, with uplifting character arcs built around salvation and not necessarily the destruction of the human body and soul", and "Growth does not truly occur without a certain level of despair and fear" (Digital Extremes, Jul 14, 2026).
The roots are older films about nature and people. At the 2022 reveal Crookes named The NeverEnding Story and Princess Mononoke, and spoke of "nature and humanity colliding" (Digital Extremes, Jul 16, 2022). CEO Steve Sinclair told Game Informer in 2026 that the game is "kind of a response to the cynicism of the world we are finding ourselves within today" (Game Informer, Apr 13, 2026). In play, healing is literal: you cleanse World Trees, free beasts from chains, and since Preludes 16 cleanse fish of corruption before releasing them. Music carries the story too; the songs are on Music.
